The upcoming 48th MOA ASM 2018 will be held in Penang, the Pearl of the Orient. We are in the midst of organising the meeting and the scientific committee is busy putting the programme together. "Bugs, Bones and Surgeons' Moans" is the theme of the meeting and we will be focusing on infection in Orthopaedics and its various subspecialties as well as its many facets. The difficulty of diagnosis, its management and prevention of surgical site infection and the awful infected implant. The theme is a word play on the aide memoire for clinical features of hypercalcaemia (Bones, stones, groans and psychic moans). More importantly, "Bugs, Bones and Surgeons' Moans" underscores the challenges the orthopaedic community faces. The emergence of multi-resistant bacteria in orthopaedics, the destruction of bone and defects it creates and the increasing complexity, cost and morbidity for the patient that translate to surgeon despair. In my subspeciality, it is the most common cause for early revision and the most dreaded. The forward from a consensus meeting on periprosthetic joint infection which should apply broadly to orthopaedics states that "It is not an exaggeration to claim that fear of infection lives in the hearts of every surgeon who steps into the operating room daily".

In prevention, more education can be done. Operating theatre personnel and scrub nurses, junior doctors and assistants, anaesthetists, ward staff, infectious diseases physicians, microbiologists all the way up to hospital administrators who make policy and operating procedures play a role and we hope this MOA meeting will be well attended by them too.

The theme is somewhat catchy but sombre and quite in contrast to our celebratory theme last year in which we celebrated the 50th year of the MOA and looked back at the 50 years of our society and reexamined time-tested orthopaedic surgical procedures. The 2018 meeting in Penang promises to be a memorable meeting at a well laid out conference venue. Put the dates in your calendar - 10th to 12th May 2018.

On a last note, we will be having electronic posters which will cycle through the posters as well as consoles for those who want to read specific posters. Over the years the numbers of poster submissions has been increasing and last year there were 290 posters displayed. This year we will be limiting it to 200 . Please submit early.
