MESSAGE FROM THE ORGANISING & SCIENTIFIC CHAIRMAN

The upcoming 48th MOA ASM 2018 will be held in Penang, the Pearl of the Orient. We are in the midst of organising the meeting and the scientific committee is busy putting the programme together. "Bugs, Bones and Surgeons' Moans" is the theme of the meeting and we will be focusing on infection in Orthopaedics and its various subspecialties as well as its many facets. The difficulty of diagnosis, its management and prevention of surgical site infection and the awful infected implant. The theme is a word play on the aide memoire for clinical features of hypercalcaemia (Bones, stones, groans and psychic moans). More importantly, "Bugs, Bones and Surgeons' Moans" underscores the challenges the orthopaedic community faces. The emergence of multi-resistant bacteria in orthopaedics, the destruction of bone and defects it creates and the increasing complexity, cost and morbidity for the patient that translate to surgeon despair. In my subspeciality, it is the most common cause for early revision and the most dreaded. The forward from a consensus meeting on periprosthetic joint infection which should apply broadly to orthopaedics states that "It is not an exaggeration to claim that fear of infection lives in the hearts of every surgeon who steps into the operating room daily". continue »
